The ministry is undertaking a multi-year reconstruction of the Highway 401 and
Leslie Road interchange, which includes replacement of all structures at Leslie
Road and the Don River over five (5) construction phases. The current
construction project is Contract 2, which commenced in April 2022 and is
expected to be completed by December 2026.
Since Contract 2 commenced, Betty Sutherland Trail has been closed and we
understand that it has been an inconvenience to the surrounding community.
Temporary closure of the trail is necessary to ensure public safety during the
extensive interchange construction activities. While the current reopening date of
the trail is scheduled for December 2026, the ministry is exploring options to
advance this date. This review includes options to work over winter, which
unfortunately means that opening the trail in the winter months may not be
possible.
The ministry is also exploring options to maintain trail access during the
remaining three (3) construction projects. Temporary, short-term closures will be
required to ensure public safety during construction activities, such as the
removal of the Don River bridges. Trail detours will be considered to minimize
impact. Advance signage will be provided by both the ministry and City of
Toronto to inform trail users of planned closures.
